Shimla, The Former British Summer Capital of India

Prior to Indian independence on August 15, 1947, Shimla was the summer capital of India and we visited the Viceregal Lodge, which was built in 1888.  This incredible stone lodge still stands strong on the top of a mountainside and was used for the summer residence of the British Viceroy.  During the second President's term (once India became an independent country), he transformed the mansion into The Indian Institute of Advanced Study.  Now, up to 35 post-doctorates study and conduct research in the lodge year-round.

Set atop a mountainside, the Monkey Temple, with very naughty monkeys.  One of my fellow travelers, Julia, decided to visit inside one of the buildings and a monkey stole her shoes - A very nice older man had to bribe it with food before we could get them back!
