The main port on Zanzibar island, Stone Town has a long history in the slave trade in Africa and it's architecture reflects the divergent influences from a variety of cultures - Predominantly Muslim now, it was under British colony rule with Arab leaders for a long time and it's winding streets and alleys were fascinating to walk through on a city tour one afternoon. Many of the buildings are literally crumbling plaster, revealing the old stonework underneath. After a heart-breaking visit to one of the largest and last-to-close slave markets in the world (it's now a museum) , we meandered through local markets and around the waterfront.
